2011 Eureka! Fellow Heather Witherow
Since 2004 I have held the Senior Library Assistant position supervising ten clerks in the circulation department at the Ovitt Community Family library, which is the main branch of the Ontario City Library. My job consists of providing good customer service. That may look like providing the proper customer service training for the clerks that work at the circulation desk, keeping statistics on the status of material, location, as well as requests being made, so our customers can receive holds and find material. Knowing our customers and our collection helps us to establish a good relationship with our community. We are the first and the last desk a customer sees while at the library.
My first experience working in a library was in a small branch in New Jersey as a page in my teen years. The travel bug brought my family and me out to California when I was in high school. Shortly thereafter I became a student aid in my high school’s library. Taking another job as a page at the San Bernardino County Chino branch library, eventually led me to apply for another page position at Ontario, which then led me to apply for a library assistant in adult reference at the Ontario City library as well.
I have always been active with my church in the community. I have taught children’s Sunday school classes for twelve years as well as helped organize teen fundraising events. Currently I co-chair a ministry called helping hands where anyone within the church needs help within a variety of different ways we will organize a group to go out and help them and we also provide help with food if needed. I have completed a full marathon for leukemia and volunteered for six years in my children’s elementary school classrooms. I also helped to set up the new library when my children’s new Woodcrest Elementary school first opened its doors.
Currently I am attending graduate school to complete my MLIS in spring 2013. By attending Eureka! and completing my education I hope to become a solid leader, one that is personable and who communicates well.
I enjoy the arts, music, writing, painting, traveling, creating and exploring. I hope to join upper management, leading libraries and communities together in new and exciting ways of partnering that they need and want while using my creativity to put things together that may not have been done before but when people see it they will realize that it was just what they needed!
