2011 Eureka! Fellow Lana Adlawan
A co-worker once said to me, “your life is one big library adventure” and I wholeheartedly agree. As a recent transplant back to the sunny state of California from New York City in November of 2010, I joined the talented folks at Sacramento Public Library as a way of continuing the adventure in my professional development. I’m currently the Branch Supervisor for the South Natomas branch of Sacramento Public Library, a branch that’s located in a community that exudes local pride as well as a love and a need for library services.
Before joining the team at Sacramento Public Library, I worked for Brooklyn Public Library in Brooklyn, NY for two years as a children’s librarian in their Central Library. I started with BPL in 2006 when I was accepted into the Public Urban Library Service Education (PULSE) program, a collaborative IMLS funded partnership between Pratt Institute’s School of Information and Library Science, and Brooklyn Public Library. I graduated from Pratt Institute in 2008 with a master’s degree in information and library science. My undergraduate degree is from the University of California, Santa Cruz in community studies, with a minor in education.
In my spare time, I’m very active in YALSA and ALA. In 2009 I was a participant in the ALA Emerging Leaders program, as well as serving on YALSA’s Alex Award Committee from 2009-2011. Currently, I am chairing the Young Adult Literature Award Committee for the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) and look forward to joining the Coretta Scott King Award Committee in 2012. Clearly, I am someone who loves books!
I applied to the Eureka! Institute to not only work on a great teen project for my library system, but for the chance to network with other library leaders throughout California. I hope to discuss the challenges faced in many of our communities, as well as the innovative solutions.
