2012 Eureka Fellow: Diane Cowen
I work for the Santa Cruz Public Libraries (SCPL) at our administrative headquarters in Downtown Santa Cruz. Since January 2012, I have been in a newly created position as the Virtual Services Coordinator for the library system. In essence, I am responsible for the library’s virtual presence. I manage implementation of new virtual projects and services, then relinquish control to other staff (if I’m lucky). I am also responsible for our library’s social media presence. Although I have some rudimentary web design skills, I am not a code junkie or a programmer. I often act as a bridge between our IT department and the rest of staff. Shaping this new position has been a great opportunity, and I am glad to have the benefit of what I learn at the Eureka! Leadership Institute to assist me as I continue to grow into this new position.
Prior to my position as the Virtual Services Coordinator, I acted as the branch manager of two different branches at SCPL. I enjoyed running the teen branch and creating teen programs. I have had a variety of paraprofessional positions in the Santa Cruz Public Library System, from page to manager.
My desire to help shape and grow the future-- which led me to pursue my professional degree --has now brought me to this institute. I hope the Eureka! Leadership Institute will help me develop leadership and communication skills that will enable me to share my vision of the future for libraries in Santa Cruz, foster a sense of innovation, and facilitate positive discussions at SCPL.
I love living in Santa Cruz with my husband Cody and my cat Mao-Mao. I am lucky that I can ride my bike to work most days and that I live in such a beautiful town. I am an avid roller derby fan, and glad that we have such a great team!
