2012 Eureka Fellow: Erwin Magbanua

Erwin MagbanuaI have worked at San Diego Public Library since 1994. I started as an aide, promoting to clerk shortly after, then to library assistant, and on to youth services librarian. I’ve been a branch manager for over two years now and was recently assigned as the manager of the Mission Valley Library. I’ve worked in a variety of settings, from very small suburban branches to specialized sections in a large downtown library. I’ve also had the pleasure of serving some of the most diverse communities in San Diego. As a result I think I’ve had a pretty well-rounded career at SDPL and a very satisfying one at that. At my current branch I manage the operations of a medium-sized public library, supervise nine employees, provide programming for adults, manage the collection, conduct outreach, and assist with reference and clerical tasks as needed. I have been part of several committees over the years and am currently serving on our Emergency Operations and Comic Con Committees.

I’m always looking to improve the ways we serve our communities and make the library more usable and appealing to an increasingly digitally-inclined population. With the Institute I hope to gain the right tools and a push (or two) in the right direction to make myself a better leader. I also look forward to meeting and sharing ideas with my peers whom I’ve learned can be the most valuable resources you can have.

I am married with two small boys. My absolute favorite thing to do is spend whatever spare time I have with my wife and kids.
