2012 Eureka Fellow: Jessica Goodman

Jessica GoodmanI work at the Palo Alto City Library in the Technical Services division mostly.  I also work in public services on the reference desks at our Mitchell Park and Main library branches and in programming.  As a senior librarian my main responsibility is technology projects.  I handle social media, digital services such as eBooks and downloadable media, mobile devices & services, technology training for staff, technology programs for the public, and Virtual Library development.  I’ve worked as a librarian in Palo Alto for approximately 3 ½ years.  Prior to that I worked in circulation at the Santa Cruz Public Libraries, in bookstores (new & used), and teaching undergraduates as a graduate student in Literature at UC Santa Cruz.

I live with my partner, also a librarian, in Mountain View, CA.  I’ve previously lived in Palo Alto, Santa Cruz, New Orleans and Atlanta.  My hobbies include running (I’m currently training for my first marathon—wish me luck!), hiking, practicing yoga, and vegan cooking.

I’m excited to attend Eureka! 2012.  I hope to discover my own leadership potential as it’s something I hadn’t previously given much thought.  I’m really excited to develop relationships with other emerging library leaders in California.  The opportunity to meet together in person for a sustained and focused time period sounds like the perfect recipe for dynamic synergy and creativity!  I think Eureka! will help me gain experience in taking ownership of a substantial project from the seed of an idea, through the grant application process, all the way through to evaluation and considerations for the future.  I’m also looking forward to bringing back what I learn to my colleagues and my community so the Palo Alto City Library can soar to new heights.
