2012 Eureka Fellow: Shauna Redmond
I am currently working for the Pasadena Public Library, managing two branches: the Allendale Branch (situated between the campuses of a middle school and a high school--lots of teens and tweens!), and the Linda Vista Branch (tucked away in a neighborhood of beautiful homes overlooking the Rose Bowl). Between the two sites, we serve a diverse array of patrons, of all ages. I supervise seven staff, and plan programs, work with class visits, conduct outreach to schools and community organizations, and work with an active Friends of the Library group, along with helping patrons with whatever they need.
I have been at PPL for ten years, and started there fresh out of Library School (UCLA) in 2002. Initially, I was a Reference Librarian at the lovely Central Library, before moving to the branches as a Branch Manager in 2007. Prior to earning my MLIS, I worked for 10 years as a bookkeeper/controller for a restaurant company. The accounting aspect of that suited me--organizing "order from chaos" serves librarianship as well, and is part of what drew me to pursue a library career. That, and curiosity about many subjects, a love of books and reading, and a desire to be around lots of different kinds of people. The challenge of helping any and all comers, no matter what they might be trying to find or do, means this job never becomes routine.
I have been married for seven years to my husband, Bryan, a fellow public librarian (we met in Library School). Bryan is a Reference Librarian at a neighboring system (Glendale Public Library). We have a 3-1/2-year-old son, Jasper, who lights up the world.
