2012 Eureka Fellow: Tracey Lilyquist
I work for the Nevada County Library, Madelyn Helling Branch in Nevada City, California; population 3064. I’m a Library Assistant III, working as the Volunteer Coordinator at the Helling Branch and Head of Processing for the Western County branches. In my capacity as Volunteer Coordinator, I oversee 68 senior helpers.
I have 14 years of library experience and earned the nickname, “Mrs. Sillyquist” while working for the Washington Union School District in Monterey County. I worked for two years with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in a school setting. Within the Nevada County Library system, I’ve worked in the children’s department at the Grass Valley Library where I developed the Nancy Drew Book Club and in the Technical Services department at the Helling Branch in addition to my current position.
I’m quirky and artistically enthusiastic. Married with four children, when not baking, I enjoy kayaking, going to the movies and stamping cards. I refuse to eat most vegetables, and if I were on death row, my last meal would be a hot dog with purple onions, relish and mustard.
I wanted to be a part of the Eureka! experience to gain a new perspective on the relationship between libraries and the community. I plan to stretch myself and am excited about being a part of a group whose goal is to make life better for their next door neighbor.
