2009 Eureka! Leadership Institute: Lyda Truick
My name is Lyda Truick, and I am currently a children's librarian at the Glendale Public Library Central Branch. I have been a librarian with the city of Glendale since October 2006. I received my MLIS from San Jose State in December 2005, and worked as a part time librarian until coming to Glendale. I really became interested in working at libraries when I was employed with the Braille Institute Library for five years. When I graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 1997, with a degree in Literature, I worked as a Private Investigator and an Editorial Assistant prior to landing in the world of libraries. I wasn't sure I wanted to get into children's librarianship until my two internships through the "From Interns to Library Leaders" program, sponsored by the Southern California Library Cooperative.
Outside of work, I spend most of my time with friends and family. A group of library coworkers and I have what we call "Food Foraging Fieldtrips" every so often to sample various local cuisine and restaurants. Other than that, I read, watch a lot of movies, vacation as much as fiscally possible, and I am starting my own wedding consulting business.
I was mostly interested in attending the Eureka! Institute to fuel some new ideas, put a little spark back into my job, and basically give me more to do at my job. I am hoping to come away from the Institute with a few new librarian connections, a slew of ways to reach out to my target audience for my project, and tools and resources to help make my job a little easier, a little challenging, and a lot of fun.
