The California State Library, in partnership with Infopeople, is pleased to offer an exciting professional development initiative - the Eureka! Leadership Program. The Program has been designed for professional librarians with between three and ten years of professional library experience, but is also open to those in library management positions who do not have an MLS. The Program is looking for California public library staff who exhibit leadership potential and are willing to share with others their enthusiasm, optimism, and vision for future library services.
The Eureka! Leadership Program is comprised of three basic parts: the Eureka! Leadership Institute, the Eureka! Encore, and the Eureka! Anniversary. Additionally, workshops, scholarships and other special opportunities are offered throughout the year to extend the Eureka! experience beyond the one-year Institute arc.
The Eureka! Leadership Institute is an intensive six-day residential leadership training program for California libraries. It is similar to the Aurora Leadership Institute (Australia) but incorporates a project component similar to the Urban Libraries Council's Executive Leadership Program. It was first offered to California libraries in 2008. Each year, 32 people from public libraries throughout California are selected, through a competitive application process, to take part in the Eureka! Leadership Institute. This FAQ provides more information on the Institute.
The 2015 Eureka! Leadership Institute is scheduled for March 18-23, 2015.
The Eureka! Encore is a two-day follow-up to the Institute. This two-day event offers the Institute Fellows a chance to check-in with each other, their Mentors and the Institute facilitators. They take part in skills-building exercises and discussions and generally get a little boost at the halfway point in their projects. The 2014 Eureka! Encore is scheduled for October 6-7, 2014.
The Eureka! Anniversary is a two-day event that takes place one year after the Institute. The Anniversary is an opportunbity for the Fellows to present their projects to their Mentors, the Institute facilitators and their library directors. The 2014 Eureka! Anniversary is scheduled for June 8-9, 2015.
