2010 Eureka! Leadership Institute: Manny Escamilla
I work at the Santa Ana Public Library as the archivist of the Santa Ana History Room. My main duties involve developing and implementing archival policies for the Santa Ana Library, assisting with research requests, and developing community contacts with an emphasis on outreach to local historical organizations. Additionally I am a YA mentor and assistant program coordinator with the Santa Ana TeenSpace. In that capacity I help to oversee volunteer activities, teen programming, and running history based projects with teen volunteers.
I graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in History 2008 and I am currently attending San Jose State's Library program. I have interned with the UC Berkeley - Emma Goldman Papers, the UCI Special Collections Department, and organized an independent research project at the British National Archives.
I just loved working in an archival setting, but I am still very much attracted to working with teenagers as a mentor. So I just try and figure out ways to combine both of my passions. To this end my major work related projects are organizing and training teen volunteers for a citywide oral history program and serving as a coach for the Orange County National History Day competition.
I still have much to learn about networking and what it takes to be an effective leader. I want to use this opportunity to develop my strengths and understand my weaknesses.
